In the recent development, relatives
of Madam Abla Ahiamata, who died on Friday March 5,2021 at Ablorme Kokonugbe, a
suburb of the district capital and the body deposited at the facility, were
thrown into a state of shock when they visited the facility to check on their
decease but noticed her left eye was plucked off.
Mr. John Zigah, the Unit Committee
Member who assisted the family to deposit the corpse told the Finder Newspaper
reporter that, he was very surprised and saddened this happened at the facility
adding that, he tried to report the development to the hospital authorities but
when all effort proved futile, he moved further to report the case to the
Dzodze District Police command.
The Ketu North Police Commander, DSP
Christian Dogbatsey, confirmed the happening to our reporter adding that, this
is the second case reported to his command within two weeks regarding similar
development.
He narrated that, on February 24 this
year, the administrator of St Anthony’s hospital reported to the station the
body of a 68-year-old patient, Ms. Eyi Yakanu, who died at the hospital was
deposited at the morgue but on the 16 February, check on her body reveals that
both eyes were plucked off and the flesh of her forehead also peeled off.
He said about two weeks later, on
March 8, Mr. John Zigah also reported to the station that, a body of his
relative late Ms. Ahiamata Abla whose body was deposited on the 5th
of March had her left eye plucked off after three days of visit.
According to the commander, a total of
10 suspects have been picked up and granted bail by the Dzodze police in
connection with the happenings, 5 each from the February 24 and March 8
incident respectively.
He said, all the 10 suspects included
some security personnel, Mortuary attendants and staff from the facility and
are currently assisting in investigation.
Even though investigations are not yet
concluded, he suspected that, the action might have been done for some ritual
purpose in a time where there is a rampant incidents of money ritual popularly
called sakawa.
He further called on all residents to
help provide the police with information to aid in the arrest of the
perpetrators of these crime as he observed that, residents in the Ketu North
municipality have been helpful to the District command in fighting crime in the
municipality.
However, the Keta-Akatsi Catholic
Diocesan Health Directorate and the Management team of the hospital said, they
are collaborating with the Dzodze District Police Command to unravel the
mystery surrounding the disappearance of the body parts in the facility’s
mortuary.
Reverend Fr Lt Col WDK Sraha (RTD),
the Director-Diocesan Health Service, described the development as shameful and
shocking as he assured the families and the general public that, stringent
measures are put in place by management to bring the perpetrators of these
crimes to book.
According to Rev Fr Sraha, management
cannot conclude prematurely that, the incident is an act of human involvement
but to rely on reports from the Ghana Police Service and other scientific
investigative reports to establish the fact behind the incident.
He explained that, three different
investigative teams have been set up by their outfit to help the police speed
up investigation as well as a service of a Pathology from the 37 military
hospital, Accra, employed to examine the bodies for thorough investigations.
He said March 19,2021 have been given
as deadline to the internal investigative team to report their findings to
management for further action.
“we encouraged the community and
staffs of the facility to provide Management and the Police any possible leads
that can support our investigation to find out the people involved in these
unethical acts, if it is a human activity” he pleaded.
He further assured the general public
that, the facility is safe for public patronage
