The National Petroleum
Authority (NPA) has today, made exposition of the National Liquefied Petroleum
Gas Policy and the Cylinder Recirculation Model in Ho, Volta Region.
According to one of the
executive board members, Shillah Abiamoh, the policy seeks to provide direction
on marketing and distribution of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in a safe and
efficient manner, and also facilitate an increase in access to LPG nationwide.
“the goal of NPA in
initiating this policy is to ensure that at least 50% of Ghanaians have access
to safe LPG for increased domestic, commercial and industrial usage by 2030”
she added
.
The Vice Chairman for the
parliamentary select committee on Mines and Energy, Hon. Duker George Mireku in
his turn said that NPA will initiate a Cylinder Recall exercise where old gas
cylinders will be exchanged for new ones.
According to Mr. Duker, the
government will provide the cylinders to households and this shall be filled at
bottling plants and supplied at specialized retail outlets.
He added that this
initiative is collectively approved by both the majority and minority in
parliament, hence the need for nationwide stakeholder agreement so as to
activate the policy.
Speaking further, he said
these cylinders will not only be in circulation in the regional capital but
will also be made available in all villages and towns in the region so as to
curb deforestation since most people fell down trees for charcoal.
Paramount Chief for
Adaklu traditional area, Togbe Gbogbi Atsa V moreover appealed to everyone to
support and entertain the national liquefied petroleum gas policy and the
cylinder recirculation model so as to ensure the existence of robust and
standard health, safety and environmental practices in the production,
marketing and consumption of liquefied petroleum gas.
He added that this
initiative must be lauded by everybody in the region and the country as well
for massive development in the energy sector
