The
Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) through its foundation has procured
and donated a Stand-by generator to the Worawora Government Hospital in the Oti
Region as part of its corporate social responsibilities.
The
110KVA/120KVA generator set according to the Executive Director of the
foundation, Dr. Dominic Kwesi Eduah, costs Ghc 150,000.00
The
initiative, he said, is to resolve the power challenges facing the facility to
power its equipment as well as supply power in the day to day running of the
hospital.
He
noted that, the aim of the foundation is to impact lives through education and
training, economic empowerment and the provision of environmental and social
amenities.
Dr.
Eduah said, as part of their corporate social responsibility, they have given
scholarships to one thousand Ghanaians to see them through the educational
sector in the country adding that sixty-five Ghanaians have also been given
scholarships to study abroad.
Dr.
Dominic Kwesi Eduah highlighted that during his tour to the various offices in
the facility, he assessed that Worawora hospital has exercised proper
administrative skills in serving the people with good healthcare initiatives
especially the giant steps in paperless administration of medical services.
The
Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Dr. Isaac Secorm explained that the previous
faulty generator always poses substantial challenges which negatively affect
the health service delivery at the facility.
“all
service transactions are conducted on a computer-based system so any prolonged
interruption in power supply brings all service deliveries to a halt” He noted.
Dr.
Secorm further stated that, though GNPC foundation has made efforts to
supplying the facility with a generator set, the hospital also lacks many other
things among which is low staffs’ strength.
He
said, the current working staffs’ strength at the facility is very low in terms
of numbers, adding that government should help provide the facility with
doctors and nurses since the daily attendance of Out-patients department increase
every day.
He
also appealed to the government to provide the hospital with a vehicle which will
be used for carrying out health delivery services in the district and the
region as a whole.
The
Chief Executive for the Biakoye district and a representative of the the Oti
Regional Minister, Comfort Attah, noted that the worawora hospital as one of
the oldest in the region has been of great help to the people of Oti region.
She
said government is poised at improving health facilities in the region hence
the need for everyone to put hands on deck to achieve this purpose.
She
said government will endeavor to provide the necessary amenities required for
the smooth administration and delivery of health services in the Worawora
hospital.
The
Health Director for the Biakoye District, Madam Rita Ama Abodey, lauded the
efforts of GNPC Foundation for their kind gesture.
She
further called on the management of the hospital to ensure productive use of
the generator to save lives and provide good and quality healthcare services in
the district and the region as a whole.
The
Akwamuhene of Worawora, Nana Osei Bonso noted that, the hospital has been of
substantial aid to the district, therefore he will partner with other
traditional rulers in ensuring that the necessary contributions are made to
help the hospital render good health services.
Nana
also donated a set of “Heart start” machines to the hospital on behalf of the
traditional council in the district.
Background
The
Worawora hospital was established in 1951 and structured into governmental
management in 2004,
The
hospital is said to have one hundred and ten (110) bed capacity and serves a
population of over 187,000 people in three adjacent district-Kedjebi and Krachi
East District in addition to Biakoye Districts.
According
to reports, the hospital is also a main referral center for the Kedjebi, Krachi
East and Biakoye district health facilities with a daily record of one hundred
and thirty (130) out-patient attendance.
Workers
in the hospital said, the greatest challenge they face is the frequent
breakdown of the old generator set of 85KV capacity which has been in service
since 2008 which GNPC has now taken care of with a 110KVA/120KVA generator set.
The
management of the Worawora Government Hospital in February this year wrote to
the Ghana National Petroleum Company (GNPC) to solicit support to purchase a
generator set for the hospital
