Regional Deputy Coordinator for Ghana Independent Broadcasting Association (GIBA),
Mr Akpabli Daniel Yao popularly known as Sir DY who doubles as news editor at
Fafaa FM has called on the government and other authorities to handle cases of
attacks on journalists as a matter of urgency and not trivial.
According
to the Deputy Coordinator, this will go a long way to curtail the rate at which
media practitioners are abused in this country since the perpetrators will not
go scott free.
“The
authorities should attend to these forms of attacks with the urgency they need
and not treat them as trivial matters”
Mr
Akpabli Daniel’s comment comes after a female reporter from Multimedia was
assaulted by the ruling New Patriotic Party faithful, Hajia Fati at the party’s
headquarters in Accra on Friday, 4th May, 2018.
In an interview with MyNewsGH.com, Vadze Mensah Divine, the Deputy Coordinator
condemned the attack by Hajia Fati a journalist and described it as very
unfortunate and must be condemned by all. He stated, he is also a victim of
these violent attacks on journalists.
“It’s unfortunate that at this point where Ghana is ranked first in the whole
Africa as far as press freedom is taken into cognizant that this is happening.
That is not to say that attacks on journalists were not experienced in the
past. I was also a victim myself. These attacks must be condemned by all” he
stated.
Sir DY
suggested the media association should engage policy makers to formulate
policies that will desist the general public from abusing Ghanaian journalists
in discharging their duties.” The media association should engage the
policymakers to see the way forward”
He
advises the media houses to come together as one force to ensure their voices
are heard on matters of this nature and also implores various media house
owners to ensure the security of their employees in other to limit some of
these abuses.
Akpabli
Daniel Yao further exhorted the media practitioners to be mindful of these
violent attacks and observe the ethical principles in their day-to-day
activities.
“Media
practitioners should also be mindful of these hazards and be professional and
ethical in their journalistic endeavors”
